History is the study of what happened in the past. We study history so we have a better understanding of when, why and how our ancestors did what they did and how we might learn from them. History can focus on important events and leaders, but can also tell the story of how everyday people lived. In this website we focus on the History of the United Arab Emirates and tell its rich story through ancient objects, written documents, and photographs.
History is all around us! It is in the stories our grandparents tell us about their lives, or written documents from that time. It can be seen in the ancient walls of buildings like Qasr Al Hosn, made when people used coral, plaster, and sand to construct magnificent buildings. Ancient objects found on archaeological digs are also important. Studying them tells us about the sort of society that existed thousands of years ago. Our understanding of history is always changing as new information becomes available.
A historian studies documents to understand what happened in the past. These documents include ancient books and diaries, newspapers, paintings as well movies and videos. They can also use ‘oral histories’, which are recordings of people talking about their own lives.
An archaeologist studies objects to understand what happened in the past. These objects can include ancient pieces of pottery, stone tools, animal bones or even shells. They find these objects on digs where they carefully remove them from the ground, taking note of what else was found at that site.
Anthropologists also study history. By talking to people and asking them about their lives, they can come to a better understanding of a society’s identity and traditions. They can also observe actions like dance to better understand a society’s history.
